THM files (thumbnails) are generated by various camera manufacturers, such as GoPro, Canon, Sony and Olympus, as small preview images for video and photo files. Technically, these are standard low-resolution JPEG images (typically 160×120 or 320×240 pixels); however, due to the .THM file extension, they are not automatically recognised and displayed as images by many programmes and operating systems.
Although a .thm file can in principle be opened simply by renaming it to .JPG, a proper conversion cleans up the JPEG header and removes camera-specific metadata, which in rare cases can lead to display issues in image editing programmes.
